The iRobot Roomba 550 adjusts automatically when the floor surface changes from carpet to wood, tile, linoleum, and even rugs. It has high-speed counter rotating brushes that are able to pick up dirt, crumbs, and hair that is found throughout their homes. The anti-tangle technology and auto reverse prevent the brushes from becoming tangled with hair or catching on any loose threads in the carpet or rugs. It has a gentle-touch bumper that senses when the vacuum robot is encountering an obstacle and it then cleans around it. It also has a dirt sensor that can sense when an area has more dirt and needs more cleaning than other areas in the home and it takes more time to clean those areas. It has been designed to fit under beds, couches, dressers and other areas that are hard to clean under without moving them. Another feature of the vacuum clean robot is that it can be programed to schedule cleaning times so that it can clean while owners are out or only on the weekends. It also has a cliff sensor which lets the unit know when it is approaching an edge this prevents it from falling down the stairs, it also has a Virtual Wall system. The Virtual Wall system allows for owners to dictate where the robot can clean and where it cannot. This allows for them to set up barriers and to confine the unit to certain areas of their homes. The iRobot Roomba 550 comes with a dustbin that can be easily empty and has a filtration system that catches dust, pollens, and other allergens that are commonly found throughout homes.

Many owners of the Roomba have found that it does require a little maintenance. The Roomba may require a little cleaning from time to time this includes cleaning the brushes, cleaning the pet hair off of the rollers, and emptying and cleaning the dust bin. This cleaning will help the unit run better and hopefully last longer. Users of the Roomba have noticed several of the new improvements to the model including that it is now easier to replace pieces that have been worn out or broken in the unit. As with maintenance some pieces have to be replacing as well over time this often includes the brushes, filters, and batteries. Those that have purchased the Roomba 550 have found that it can run for almost two hours on a single battery charge but this can depend of the size of the space being vacuumed and also the amount of vacuuming that needs to be done. According to most users the 550 model is much easier to program than previous ones and that it is also much quieter than the older models.

Although many have given the Roomba 550 good reviews some have noted that the vacuum does not always stop before it runs into things but that it often slows down but still bumps into objects but that it still vacuums well. They have also found that sometimes it is difficult to program the virtual wall technology because it is hard to tell where the front of the unit is and therefore can be hard to set the virtual walls in the right direction. The Roomba 550 is also a fairly well priced unit for all that it does and it is easy to find replacement parts if there is a need to.

Users agree that it does a good job in vacuuming the floors but if there is anything on the floor that it can suck up than it likely will (magazines, papers, hair ties) anything that is small or flat than it can probably be sucked up by the Roomba. Many that have purchased the Roomba 550 have noticed that although it bumps into things it can find its way out of tight spots and dead ends by bumping into the obstacles until it has turned the right direction. Other users have noticed that it cleans as well maybe even better than a normal vacuum.

As mentioned before users have noticed that they have to maintain their Roombas or they experience breakdowns and have to often replace parts. Maintenance is an ongoing part of owning a Roomba 550. Some users have noted that it has to be cleaned after every use but others say that it needs to be cleaned only every now and then.

  • Nicely priced
  • Cleans very well
  • Has virtual wall technology
  • Comes out of the box ready to vacuum
  • Returns to charger after every vacuum
  • Has cliff sensors to prevent it from falling
  • Fits into tight places

  • Needs constant cleanings
  • Hard to set the virtual wall technology because it is difficult to figure out the front of the unit
  • Bumps into things

Overall the iRobot Roomba 550 is a good and effective vacuum cleaning robot that is hands free and cleans just as well if not better than a normal vacuum. It does need to be cleaned on a regular basis and requires some maintenance. It also bumps into things before it figures out the path that it needs to clean on, it also has the technology for users to set up times for the vacuum to clean.
