What I really like about the GE Profile PEM31SMSS Spacemaker Countertop Microwave Oven is that it can be mounted under cabinets. Meaning it can save space. And just like other microwave ovens that we see nowadays, this one is equipped with sensor cooking which automatically adjusts time and power for delicious cooking results. The Sensor Features detect the increasing humidity released during cooking. The oven automatically adjusts the cooking time to various types and amounts of food. However, there is a disclaimer on the user’s manual of this oven which basically says not to use the Sensor Features twice in succession on the same food portion as it may result in severely overcooked or burnt food .
GE Profile PEM31SMSS Spacemaker Countertop Microwave Oven Features:
- It has 1.0 cu. ft. capacity (800 Watts (IEC-705 test procedure))
- Sensor Cooking Controls
- Auto and time defrost
- Turntable on/off
- Optional hanging kit
It also has a ‘Reheat’ feature that as the name itself implies, is used when you want to reheat your food.
One more addition to its features is the Child Lockout. Just like what we can find on smartphones and tablets, it basically locks the control panel so that children cannot use the microwave unsupervised. You can also use this feature when cleaning the exterior to avoid accidental push of the buttons.
Another feature that this one boasts is its Auto&Time Defrost. Just simply imply enter the weight of the food, and the oven automatically sets the optimal defrosting time and power level or set your desired time for defrosting.
Furthermore, the user has the ability or control to turn on or off the turntable inside. I don’t see any practical reason why you would want to turn it off, but it is a cool feature for some. As a matter of fact, it is explicitly mentioned on the user’s manual to turn the turntable on for best cooking results.
Other features that are pretty much standard with microwave ovens of this day and age are Cooking Complete Reminder, which is understandably needed, and the Demo Mode which should give the user some guidance on how to use the basic operations of the appliance.
By the way, it also has the option to turn on or off the LCD display which I have no idea why you would want to do that. Maybe it is for saving electricity; just take it with a grain of salt though.
This GE Profile is on the large side for a compact microwave, with a 1-cubic-foot capacity and a 24-by-12-inch footprint. The good news is its 11-inch height helps when squeezing it into small spaces, including under cabinets (with the help of optional mounting hardware). The bad news though is that it is not suitable for reheating or cooking multiple dishes simultaneously. Also, it doesn’t have a round cavity like what we can find on other brands which will make you exert extra effort reaching through corners.
This kitchen buddy has only 800 watts of cooking power, which makes for longer cooking times. Fortunate enough, it does have useful features such as sensors and express-cook controls.
Despite of the fact that professionals’ and average users say that this microwave heats evenly, it gets low marks for its defrosting performance. Also, there are reports that the white coating is bubbling and peeling off of the inner top surface of the microwave over time of use. Also, some users find its display confusing to use. In addition, users note that this model is easy to clean as well. And not to mention, this microwave oven is built with stainless steel exterior.
The GE Profile PEM31SMSS Spacemaker Countertop Microwave Oven comes in four finishes: black, white, bisque or stainless steel. Its warranty covers parts and labor for one year and the magnetron tube (the part that generates microwave radiation) for five years respectively.
In addition to the facts above, this GE Profile oven is one of the four models that earned a grade of B-plus in tests conducted by the Good Housekeeping Research Institute (GHRI). This one is also included in current reviews of microwaves at ConsumerReports.org, which are based on thorough and detailed testing, and it is rated a Best Buy at ConsumerGuide.com.
To wrap it up, the PEM31SMSS GE Profile Spacemaker Countertop Microwave Oven is a good choice for those who want flexibility in terms of where to put or locate usual appliances. It may not be the best our there, but it can do its basic functions for you.
